MRI went great! Every time we get one of these MRI’s they tell us there are no new or active lesions. Yet there are physical and mental declines that happen between MRI’s. And the white matter still seems to have spread…but I ain’t no doctor. When they diagnosed him with progressive MS, one doctor told me that even though there aren’t new active lesions, the old lesions still continue to do a lot of damage. Not every white spot on MRI means multiple sclerosis. Migraine can cause white matter lesions too — but the location and pattern are very different. In MS, lesions tend to appear in specific regions of the central nervous system: • Periventricular • Juxtacortical (touching the cortex) • Infratentorial (brainstem/cerebellum) • Spinal cord Neurologists diagnose MS through pattern recognition, not by simply counting spots.
