Extensive cattle ranching is the main cause of deforestation in the Amazon, as between 80 and 90 percent of cleared areas are converted into pasture for livestock. As Brazil hosts COP30, the country is attempting to improve traceability in its beef industry to curb this destruction. The main challenge is to verify whether the meat comes from illegally deforested areas.
