Twenty years ago, one of the largest tornado outbreaks ever recorded in the month of January hit several communities in Kentucky. The outbreak on Jan. 2, 2006 produced 20 tornadoes, striking throughout the central and southern United States. The tornado came through at 10:10 a.m. on Christmas Day, with winds up to 80 mph. The NWS said the tornado's path was about a quarter-mile long and had a width of 30 yards. Cameras on Whittier Boulevard near Lorena Street show violent winds sending debris flying. Two windows were blown out at a Mexican restaurant in a strip mall.
