The giant barrel sponge (Xestospongia muta) is the largest species of sponge found growing on Caribbean coral reefs. It is common at depths greater than 10 metres (33 ft) down to 120 metres (390 ft) and can reach a diameter of 1.8 metres (6 feet). It is typically brownish-red to brownish-gray in color, with a hard or stony texture.[2] The giant barrel sponge has been called the "redwood of the reef"[3] because of its size and estimated lifespan of hundreds to a thousand or more years. | Underwat

This is a barrel sponge, one of the largest sponges found on coral reefs. These sponges can live for hundreds of years and filter thousands of liters of water each day, helping maintain water clarity and quality. Surrounding it are schools of grunts—reef fish that often gather in large numbers for protection. It’s a perfect example of how different species interact and share space in a healthy reef system. . . 🇲🇽Español Esta es una esponja barril, una de las más grandes que se encuentran en lo

Giant barrel sponges are actually animals, despite the fact that they grow fixed to the reef or the ocean bottom, giving us the impression that they are plants. Scientists estimate their life span can be well over 2000 years of age. | Rumble

Giant barrel sponges are some of the largest animals on Florida’s coral reefs. Like corals, these giant sponges synchronize the release of eggs and sperm, and our researchers caught them in the act last month in the Keys! Barrel sponges are “broadcast spawners” because they release eggs and sperm into the water column. The fertilized eggs develop into larvae that travel with the currents for up to a couple of days. These larvae eventually settle to the seafloor and become new barrel sponges. Bar
