Phillies, Zack Wheeler and All-Star Game

Kyle Schwarber’s flight from San Diego to Atlanta on Sunday will be emptier without Zack Wheeler, who decided this week not to participate in Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Truist Park. It made Schwarber the Phillies’ only All-Star in the game itself.
BOTTOM LINE: The San Diego Padres lead 1-0 in a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies. San Diego is 30-17 at home and 51-43 overall. The Padres have a 29-7 record in games when they did not give up a home run.
Save for Austin Hays’ leadoff homer in the fifth inning, Wheeler was perfect. One hit. No walks. Twelve strikeouts. Bryson Stott’s two-run homer in the eighth earned Wheeler the victory.
A big day for Zack and the Phillies. He’d been told before the game that he was selected to the National League All Star Team.
All-Star reliever Jason Adam got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and San Diego's bullpen threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings as the Padres beat the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies 4-2.
