The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has implemented its traceability guidelines starting 1 December 2024. While the initiative aims to curb spam, phishing, and cyber fraud, mobile subscribers might experience temporary delays in receiving messages and one-time passwords (OTPs) during the transition period.

With effect from December 11, any traffic (messages) where the chain of Telemarketers is not defined or does not match with pre-defined chain shall be rejected.

All telecom operators and messaging service providers will have to check the origin and authenticity of every message under these rules. All these steps are being taken under the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) system which was started to stop spam and increase message traceability.

In a statement late Saturday, the regulator, however, said 27,000 principal entities (PEs) have already registered their chains with the respective telcos and further registration is in progress at a rapid pace.
