The president has spoken with the leaders of both countries as they spar over remarks the Japanese prime minister made about the Beijing-claimed island democracy.
BEIJING (Reuters) -Chinese President Xi Jinping told U.S. President Donald Trump during a phone call on Monday that Taiwan's "return to China" is a key part of the post-war international order, state news agency Xinhua reported.
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te warned the island must be combat-ready within two years as threats from China intensify. At a press conference, he cited Beijing’s escalating military and political pressure and unveiled a special $40 billion defence budget.
