The parents of a U.S. college student who vanished almost two weeks ago in the resort town of Punta Cana have asked authorities to declare her legally dead.

The student, Sudiksha Konanki, 20, was on spring break in Punta Cana when she disappeared this month, prompting a search effort. An American man who had been seen with her attended a court hearing Tuesday.

The man who is the last person known to have been with missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki is on a plane heading back to the US after he obtained a new passport, a source in the prosecutor’s office told CNN Wednesday.
