After their first loss of the 2025 season, the Miami Hurricanes no longer control their own destiny. Here's what they need in the ACC championship race.
Georgia Tech and Virginia have yet to stumble in ACC play, which makes them seemingly destined to face one another in the conference title game. Miami doesn't play UVA this year either, and the Cavaliers beat Louisville earlier in the season, meaning the Hurricanes are going to need help if they want to guarantee a spot in Charlotte.
Georgia Tech being in the mix for an ACC title game appearance is not a huge break from preseason expectations, but the rest of the competition certainly does not fall in line with how experts viewed the conference coming into the year.
The game is just Miami’s second road game of the year and will mark the first time the Hurricanes leave the state of Florida. Their only other road game to this point was their 29-22 win over the Florida State Seminoles on Oct. 4. UM only has two other road games after SMU: Nov. 22 at Virginia Tech and Nov. 29 at Pittsburgh.

Miami is coming off its first loss of the year after falling to Louisville last Friday night. Multiple factors worked towards Miami falling 24-21, and falling behind in the race to make the ACC championship game.
Miami's loss to Louisville also hands the Cardinals, who are 2–1 in conference play, a tiebreaker over the Canes. Cal and Pitt are also one-loss ACC teams; Miami doesn't play the Golden Bears but will take on the Panthers on the road to finish the season on Nov. 29.
