Mahmoud Khalil's wife and attorney both released statements on Tuesday shedding more light on the activist's detainment and the days leading up to it.
When attorneys for Mahmoud Khalil enter the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse in New York on Wednesday, they will have one mission in mind: to get their client, a Palestinian activist, released from an ICE facility in Louisiana and back to New York to be closer to legal counsel and family.
Khalil, a permanent resident of the United States, was instrumental in the pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University that began in April 2024. Khalil's wife, a US citizen who is eight months pregnant, also received threats from the ICE, according to Khalil's attorney.
The Trump administration announced a dramatic funding cut on Friday, saying it would cut federal grants and contracts worth $400 million from Columbia University for “inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students.
