An AccuWeather map shows where the outlet expects a winter storm to bring snow and ice in the central and eastern U.S. this week.

The Thanksgiving weekend storm system has brought over a foot of snow and strong winds to parts of the Midwest and thunderstorms across the South.

At 3:06 a.m. EST on Tuesday, the National Weather Service released an updated winter storm warning in effect until 7 a.m. EST for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon and Ottawa counties.

Heavy snow, ice, and blustery conditions are likely to affect travel, especially during busy periods such as commutes.

Back-to-back clipper systems are expected to bring lake-effect snow to Michigan's eastern Upper Peninsula this week, prompting a winter storm warning. In addition, snow is forecast to develop along the snowbelt this week along Michigan's west and northwest shorelines as significantly cold temperatures move in.

Colorado's first big winter storm of the season is in full swing this Wednesday morning, delivering the heaviest snowfall just in time for the commute and causing slow, slick travel along the I-25 corridor and the foothills.

AccuWeather meteorologist Alyssa Glenny told Newsweek that on average, Porter sees 11.6 inches of snow throughout December, so it came within a half-foot of hitting amounts usually seen for the entire month. In a year, Porter sees more than 65 inches of snow.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that it is temporarily reducing the speed on several roadways in the Harrisburg region due to the ongoing winter storm. In a press release, PennDOT said that while it had been treated the roads, they will not completely free of ice and snow and caution should be applied.
