BOSTON (AP) — A Tufts University doctoral student from Turkey who was detained by immigration authorities had been moved to Vermont by the time a federal judge ordered authorities to keep her in Massachusetts, lawyers for the U.S. government said.
Rümeysa Öztürk, a Tufts University graduate student, was arrested in Massachusetts and sent to the South Louisiana ICE processing center in the swamplands of Evangeline parish in Basile. Sending detainees to the cluster of remote immigration detention centers known as “Detention Alley” in the south is a common practice.
Mayor Michelle Wu and Attorney General Andrea Campbell joined speakers at Tuesday’s rally in support of detained Tufts student Rümeysa Öztürk.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security accused Ozturk, a Turkish national, of "activities in support of Hamas."
