The Utah Jazz made an eye-catching pivot in their starting lineup by resting two starters vs. the Dallas Mavericks.

We’re talking free jazz, an experiment in improvisational music that captivated the world’s greatest jazz musicians in the second half of the 20th century: Albert Ayler, Derek Bailey, Ornette Coleman — and so forth.

The bassist’s reissued ‘Mingus at Monterey’ and the drummer’s previously unreleased ‘Strasbourg 82’ highlight both musicians not just as players but as master bandleaders with an outsize influence on the genre’s evolution.

Hardy also made sure to give his flowers to the bench following the Jazz's grind-it-out victory, highlighting two specific names that played "outstanding" in the winning efforts: Taylor Hendricks and Cody Williams, and another standout in Isaiah Collier who led the team in assists while being in the second unit.

And it seems that in 2025 there was not only an abundance of new jazz releases, but the quality bar was raised again, with the bellow 11 albums, listed in artists’ alphabetical order, are among those that stood out.
