Second levee fails in Washington, forcing more evacuations, as atmospheric river renews flood threat
Two levees have failed outside of Seattle since Monday due to swollen rivers from seemingly endless heavy rain.
The National Water Center said that "considerable" flooding impacts are expected across the Cascade Foothills to Puget Sound, with urban and minor river flooding also possible throughout the remainder of western Washington and parts of northern Oregon. It also warned that landslides would be possible along the Cascade Foothills.
(THE CONVERSATION) Along the U.S. West Coast, atmospheric rivers are dreaded for the damage they can cause, but they are also essential to the region’s snowpack and water supply, as Qian Cao, a hydrologist at the University of California, San Diego, explains.
Washington is prone to intense spells of fall rainfall, but these storms have been exceptional, and more rain is on the way this weekend.
The US Geological Survey and the State Department of Natural Resources are both concerned about the risk of widespread landslides in the coming days.
