Senate Republicans' proposal to replace expiring Obamacare premium subsidies with pre-funded health savings accounts (HSAs) failed as lawmakers face year-end deadline.
The Republican bill, sponsored by Sens. Mike Crapo (Idaho) and Bill Cassidy (Louisiana) would allow existing ACA subsidies to expire and replace them with a new two-year program in which the federal government would directly pay into health savings accounts paired with certain plans on the ACA marketplace.
The Senate shot also shot down advancing a bill that would've deposited $1,000 to $1,500 into health savings accounts, or HSAs, for eligible consumers
The Republican-controlled U.S. Congress is poised to allow tax credits to lapse for 24 million Americans this month, as a December 31 deadline approaches with no sign of a healthcare compromise before the Senate votes on Thursday on dueling proposals that lack enough support to pass.
