Efforts by U.S. immigration officials to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda, a country to which the Salvadoran national has no ties, has again focused attention third-country deportations.

Judge Xinis blocked the Trump administration from removing Abrego Garcia to Uganda, for now — citing a lack of assurances from the country in question as to his legal status there.

A federal judge said Monday that she will order officials to keep Kilmar Abrego Garcia in the United States while she weighs a new legal challenge from him over the Trump administration’s plans to quickly deport him to Uganda.
