U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner, who rose from a kid in Acres Homes to serve as Houston’s mayor for eight years and was elected to Congress last year, has died.

Turner's legacy as a steadfast advocate for economic opportunity, urban resilience, and community revitalization remains deeply woven into Houston’s history.

According to Turner’s family, he was taken to the hospital after President Donald Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress and was later released. He died at approximately 5:45 a.m. Wednesday from “enduring health complications.
