Wall Street sifted through a rush of earnings reports and economic data, while a much-needed tariff reprieve for automakers helped lift stocks.

Global stocks mostly rose despite fresh signs of a tariff hit to corporate earnings, while Wall Street cheered President Donald Trump's moves to soften the levies hitting automakers.

Trump makes a momentous political comeback, breaking through the "blue wall" to win 312 electoral votes. Trump becomes only the second US president in history to be elected to non-consecutive terms, following Grover Cleveland (the 22nd and 24th US president).

The stock market’s lackluster performance under Trump only ranks ahead of the starts of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s terms in 1933 and 1937, during the depths of the Great Depression. It also outstrips both Ford and the start of Nixon’s second term in 1973, when the U.S. confronted another economic crisis in the form of stagflation.

U.S. stocks closed out Donald Trump’s first 100 days back in the Oval Office on a sour note, with the president’s trade policies taking the blame for derailing a thriving market and stoking fears the world’s largest economy could slip toward recession.
