Zach McKinstry did exactly what the Tigers needed to win on Sunday, something everyone on the team is ready to do.
Casey Mize threw seven innings of four-hit ball, Spencer Torkelson homered and the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians 1-0, their ninth straight loss.
Cleveland appeared poised to snap their skid when Steven Kwan’s RBI double in the eighth broke a scoreless tie. The rally began with Austin Hedges’ single that snapped an 0-for-10 slump, followed by a walk to Brayan Rocchio. Kwan, aiming for his third hit of the afternoon, then drove in pinch runner Daniel Schneemann with a double into the corner.
The Guardians have been shut out in four of their last eight games. They were shut out over the final eight innings last night (July 4). And they're being shut out tonight entering the top of the eighth inning, where the Tigers are still holding onto a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers aim for a three-game sweep at Progressive Field with their ace, Tarik Skubal on the mound following two one-run victories in Cleveland.
