Thousands of federal government employees have been shown the door in the first month of President Donald Trump’s administration.

A DHS spokesperson says the firings focused on non-mission critical personnel in probationary roles, and the action will save roughly $50 million. The spokesperson said the reforms are happening across the federal government to "eliminate egregious waste and incompetence.

The Trump administration and Elon Musk have insisted that they are carefully purging the federal workforce by firing only low-performing employees serving in non-critical roles, or recent hires on probationary status.
